AUTUMN DRIVING TIPS
Central Otago in autumn is stunning but presents unique driving challenges due to its cooler temperatures, early frosts, and winding roads. Here are five key driving tips:
- Beware of Frost and Ice – Overnight temperatures can drop below freezing, leading to icy roads in the mornings, especially in shaded areas, bridges, and higher-altitude roads like the Lindis Pass. Drive cautiously and allow extra time for travel.
- Use the Right Lights in Fog – Central Otago often experiences thick morning fog in valleys and along rivers. Use low-beam headlights or fog lights, not high beams, as they reflect off the fog and reduce visibility.
- Watch for Loose Gravel and Fallen Leaves – Rural roads, especially in areas like Clyde, Alexandra, and Cromwell, may have loose gravel or wet leaves that reduce traction. Slow down and avoid sudden braking.
- Be Prepared for Sudden Weather Changes – Autumn can bring rapid shifts from warm afternoons to chilly evenings, with occasional rain showers. Carry extra layers and check the weather before heading out, especially if driving through remote areas.
- Look Out for Cyclists and Tourists – With the Otago Central Rail Trail and scenic autumn landscapes, there are often more cyclists and tourists stopping for photos. Stay alert, especially on narrow roads and near popular lookouts.
NEW ZEALAND AUTOMOTIVE FACTS
- Highest Car Ownership Rate – New Zealand has one of the highest car ownership rates in the world, with around 900 cars per 1,000 people.
- First Country to Introduce Road Lines – New Zealand was one of the first countries to introduce painted road lines in 1918, starting in Dunedin to improve road safety.
- Unique Left-Hand Driving Rule – Until 2012, New Zealand had an unusual “Give Way” rule at intersections, where turning traffic had to give way to vehicles crossing from the right. This was changed to simplify road rules.
- Strong Japanese Import Market – Over half of the cars on New Zealand roads are used imports from Japan, thanks to the affordability and high quality of Japanese vehicles.
- Home to the World’s First Fully Electrified National Road Network – New Zealand is the first country to fully electrify its state highway network with a comprehensive network of EV fast-charging stations, making long-distance electric vehicle travel possible.
